The international police agency Interpol said on Tuesday that it would help to identify victims in last week's crash of Air France Flight 447 over the Atlantic Ocean.

"Since the victims of this tragedy came from all parts of the globe, international collaboration will be essential in ensuring their accurate, dignified and speedy recovery and identification so as to enable the families to begin the healing process," Interpol Secretary-general Ronald Noble said.

According to a statement from the agency, the efforts "will be based on Interpol's international accepted Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) protocols." Data such as tattoos, fingerprints, surgical implants and dental X-rays will be collected from the recovered remains.

The plane crash on June 1 took the lives of all 228 people on board. Only 24 bodies have been recovered by salvage crews so far.
