Australian paddler William Henzell said on Wednesday that he would start training for next Olympics right after he was back home following a defeat in the second round of the singles competition at Beijing Olympics.
Henzell, ranked 145th, mounted tough onslaught against 25th-ranked South Korean Yoon Jae Young who was made to sweat before claiming a narrow win 4-3.
Henzell continued his scintillating form in the previous competitions and blew a 2-0 lead in the first two sets. But Young came back strong to dominate later half of the match before wining 4-3.
The Australian, 26, beat Algerian Idir Khourta and Swiss Jens Lundqvist to advance to the second round of the singles competition.
"It is the best match I can play. Young is just too strong after the fourth set and played over my level on every single shot," Henzell said.
Henzell started playing table tennis at the age of six in Adelaide. At the age of 14, he moved from South Australia to Sweden with his then coach Suante Atlas to further his table tennis career. He completed high school in Sweden and became a full-time player at 17.
"I am happy because I've played two of my best matches in Olympics especially the one against the Swede," Henzell said.
His compatriots Kyle Davis and David Zalcberg were both thumped by Egyptian and Vietnamese opponents in the preliminary round.
Henzell said that in Australia, table tennis is a small sport which one can’t make a living with.
"But now there have been a lot of table tennis on TV about this Olympics and millions of people have seen the Australian beat some of the world's best players," he said. "Now it's up to us to get more people especially kids involved in table tennis."
