US Wraps up 1st Basketball Round with 106-57 Win over Germany

The United States became the only unbeaten team after trouncing Germany 106-57 on Monday in their final preliminary round match of the men's basketball competitions.

The US (5-0) beat their opponents by 33.8 points on average in five matches, the second best victory margin at the Olympics behind 51.5 points at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

They will face Australia, placed fourth in Group A, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The US beat Australia 87-76 in a pre-Game warm-up in Shanghai on Aug. 5.

Dwight Howard had 22 points and 10 rebounds and LeBron James added 18 for the US Dirk Nowitzki led Germany with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Sven Schultze made Germany's only basket in almost seven minutes when the US led 20-3 in the first quarter, and the game was out of touch from the Germans.

Germany finished fifth in Group B, losing the chance to advance to the quarter-finals in their first Olympic journey in 12 years.
