Sweden edged Argentina 1-0 with midfielder Nilla Fischer's second-half goal in Group E match of the Olympic women's soccer on Saturday.

Sweden broke the deadlock in the 57th minute when Fischer headed in a free kick from midfield partner Therese Sjogran.

Sweden, which conceded 2-1 to China in their opener, nailed its first win at the Olympics while Argentina, defeated 2-1 by Canada in the first round, needed to hold the European side to stay in the tournament.

With the dripping humidity in Tianjin, Sweden produced the first shot in the 7th minute when veteran striker Victoria Svensson's header was collected by goalkeeper Vanina Correa.

Sweden slowly controlled the situation, and for the South Americans, it was a difficult thing to send the ball past midfield.

The first half featured few highlights. Sweden's best chance came in the 40th minute when Svensson's close-range shot was narrowly wide of the left post.

Sweden continued to dominate in the second half. With temperatures about 33 degrees centigrade, players frequently needed to come to the bench for water.

In the 55th minute, midfielder Therese Sjogran's powerful long shot was tipped over by Correa.

Captain Svensson's header was also blocked by the post in the 68th minute, four minutes before star forward Lotta Schelin's powerful shot was stopped by Correa.

Argentina came back in the last five minute. Substitute striker Maria Potassa wasted an equalizing chance in injury-time when she cut into the box, with only goalkeeper to beat, but she shot over.

In next round of Group E, Sweden will take on Canada in the last-round of Group E while Argentina will meet host China.
