Japanese women's soccer team held on a late onslaught from DPR Korea to a scoreless draw in their final clash of group stage at the 16th Asian Games here on Thursday.
After the tie, Japan finished on top of Group B, ahead of the reigning Asiad champion DPR Korea with goal difference.
Goalkeeper Nozomi Yamago became Japan's hero later in the second half. She palmed away a dangerous shot from Ra Un Sim of DPR Korea in the 72nd minute.
Three minutes later, the in-form keeper saved another close-range effort from Ra.
Japan's captain Aya Miyama almost broke the deadlock in the final minute of stoppage time, but her free-kick was tipped away from the top corner of the net by a brilliant save from Hong Myong Hui.
The game was a repeat of the Doha Asiad final in 2006, which also finished 0-0 before DPR Korea won 4-2 on penalties.
Both teams qualified for the semifinal in the two-group, seven-team tournament.
They had to wait to know their next round opponent at the final whistle of a Group A match between China and South Korea late Thursday.
