Five miners have been trapped in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province since Wednesday, the rescue headquarters said Monday.

About 100,000 cubic meters of underground water flooded the pit of a mine operated by Guzhou Weifeng Mining Co. Ltd. in Pingding County at around 7:00 PM Wednesday, according to the rescue headquarters.

Of the 76 miners working at the time of the accident, 71 escaped and five others remained trapped underground as of Monday morning.

Rescuers have drilled tunnels into the underground shaft to pump water out.
