Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang and movie icon Jackie Chan will visit student survivors in last year's devastating May 12 earthquake in Sichuan Province on Monday as the first anniversary of the disaster is approaching.
Liu, 25, arrived Sunday evening in Sichuan provincial capital Chengdu. The gold medalist in the Athens Olympic Games in 2004 will head for Ping'an Hope Primary School in Beichuan County, a hardest-hit area in the quake, to attend a physical education class on Monday.
"It's not a show of hurdling. I'm just going to play with the kids there. We must be very happy," Liu said.
The 110-meter hurdling world champion has been in training since he returned to Shanghai in March after three months in the United States, where he underwent surgery on his right ankle tendon in December.
"Before the trip to Sichuan, he discussed with me what gifts to give the students and what games to play " said Liu's father Liu Xuegen.
In a separate event, Jackie Chan, best-known for his martial arts films, is expected to sing a song dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China with students of Beichuan Middle School, where more than 1,000 students and teachers were dead or missing in the quake.
The Hong Kong kungfu star and mainland soprano Liu Yuanyuan are promoting the song titled "Nation" since they finished a music video in April for the probable theme of this year's National Day celebrations.
The 55-year-old actor will also attend a class meeting to discuss with students social responsibilities of the young generation.
