ACEF: NGOs Playing Big Role in Environmental Protection

Chinese non-government organizations engaged in environmental protection are playing an indispensable role in the country and the world, as well, according to the All-China Environment Federation (ACEF).

A blue book on the development of China's environmental NGOs issued by ACEF says that in 2006, the country had 2,768 environmental NGOs, with almost 230,000 members.

In the past, Chinese environmental NGOs were mainly involved in publicity and protection of biological species. Now, they are active in a wide range of fields like organizing people to participate in environmental programs, giving proposals to the government, serving as an environmental monitor, helping protect environmental rights for the public, and promoting a sustainable development in the country.

ACEF, which was established on April 22, 2005, is a national environmental NGO composing former officials, environmental activists, institutions and companies.
