Snowmelt flood stranded more than 100 workers in the mountainous areas of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Thursday, local authorities said.

The flood has destroyed the mountain road in Fuyun County, Altay Region. The county's police were informed at around 2:00 PM that more than 100 construction workers of Kadebute Hydropower Water Plant were stranded in the mountain, said a spokesman of the county government.

Since there was no cell phone signal in the mountain, police could not contact them, he said.

Search and rescue efforts are underway, he said. As the workers were from south China's Guangdong Province, they might not know the way out of the mountain, he added.
