Typhoon Morakot Affects 3.4 Mln People in Zhejiang

At least one child was killed and 3.4 million were affected as typhoon Morakot slammed into east China's Zhejiang Province on Sunday, destroying houses and inundating farmlands. The economic loss was estimated at 2.2 billion yuan (US$322 million), according to the Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.
The province registered its greatest precipitation of 1100 mm in Taishun County, Wenzhou. And a whole gale have blown in the coastal area. Hundreds of villages were flooded and more than 1,800 houses collapsed in Zhejiang Province.
143,000 hectares of farmland were damaged and nearly 9,000 enterprises suspended production.
Continuous rainfall floods some counties in Wenzhou to be isolated islands. The power supply is also cut off in more than 150 villages.
Nearly 600,000 residents of Zhejiang have been evacuated and more than 30,000 ships have been called back from sea.
