The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it will be giving African countries 200 million doses of vaccine to combat A/H1N1 flu, the Lagos-based Guardian newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Peter Cerrasco, WHO Policy Adviser on Vaccine Security, made the disclosure in Abuja on Monday on behalf of the world body at a workshop to stop the spread of the Influenza AH1N1 in African countries.

He called on African governments to provide more doses of vaccines as the 200 million doses of the A/H1N1 flu vaccines will only go round 10 percent of the population of benefiting countries.

Peter Eriki, WHO country's representative, advised that African countries set up effective means through which the vaccines can be deployed.

Eriki said the AH1N1flu pandemic has devastating effects on the continent and therefore challenged governments in Africa to stop the spread of the disease.
