WB to Provide Support for Education in SE Nigerian State

The World Bank has pledged to assist in improving education in oil rich southeast Nigeria's Bayelsa State, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.
The Bank will also build the necessary capacity for civil society and government through the Governance Partnership Facility.
These were some of the resolutions reached at the end of a joint session of government and bank officials on delivery performance and transparency through public management reform and social accountability.
In a communique at the end of the session, the World Bank is also expected to undertake a public expenditure review and develop as well as initiate a modest information and media strategic campaign to further the proposed actions on transparency.
It lauded the state government for preparing a medium-term expenditure framework, updating its budget and treasury systems and manuals as well as adopting a new capital expenditure and overheads policies.
The World Bank said one key element of the government reform program is the launch of the Bayelsa Expenditure and Income Transparency Initiative (BEITI).
According to the report, the core objectives of the initiative is to provide better public service delivery and access to basic social services, institutionalization of due process and good management of resources as well as reduce vulnerability to conflict and social violence.
