Visiting European Union (EU) peace envoy to the Middle East Marc Otte on Tuesday voiced his full support for the Egyptian efforts on the reconstruction of the Palestinian territory of Gaza Strip.
During talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit, Otte said the EU is supporting Egypt's efforts for rebuilding the Palestinian enclave hit severely by a 22-day Israeli military operation which ended on January 18, said a Foreign Ministry spokesman.
The two sides discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, the Egyptian proposal to reach a long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian groups and help reach Palestinian national unity, Hossam Zaki said in a press release.
Egypt is busy preparing for hosting an international conference for Gaza reconstruction, which was scheduled for March 2 in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Egypt has also been striving to secure a lasting truce to replace the fragile ceasefires, carried out on January 18 separately by both Israel and Hamas. It also proposed an inter-Palestinian dialogue on February 22 to heal the rift among Palestinian factions.
