The Malaysia Medical Relief Society (MERCY Malaysia) have evacuated its team consisting of six doctors from the Gaza Strip among worries about the uncertainties in the conflict area there.
"About 8:00 PM Malaysian time (on Monday), the team of 6 had safely crossed the Rafah border into Egypt," the Malaysian non-government organization said in a press release here on Monday.
"The call to evacuate the team came at the behest of the Malaysian Embassy in Cairo," it said.
However, MERCY Malaysia Executive Council Member Norazam Abu Samah said that MERCY Malaysia would go back into Gaza to continue its work when the situation abates.
The organization did not wish to put its volunteers and staff in any harm's way, Norazam said.
The team had been stationed in the Gaza Strip since January 27,having sent in medical supplies and medicines worth US$400,000 including sedative agents, antibiotics, pain killers and various surgical and medical equipment, according to MERCY Malaysia.
