Turkish President Abdullah Gul Monday called on the US President-elect Barack Obama to contribute to truce in Gaza, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.
"Obama should give priority to contribute to the ceasefire process in Gaza. The United States' involvement in a determined and fair way will resolve the problem in the long-term," Gul was quoted as saying at Ankara's Esenboga Airport after attending an international meeting on the Gaza Strip in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
"Separate declaration of ceasefire by Israel and Hamas led to a cautious optimism," said Gul, adding that all participating countries at the meeting expressed their appreciation with Turkey's contribution to the process.
"Now, we must ensure that the ceasefire is mutual and durable and that Israel completely withdraws from Gaza," he said.
Israeli troops should pull out, the blockade should be lifted and Gaza should be rebuilt for the ceasefire to be durable. One of the most important things is to find a solution to the separation among Palestinians, the president added.
In addition to Gul, leaders from Britain, Egypt, France, Germany and Italy as well as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon attended Sunday's meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh to coordinate policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Israeli attacks have killed more than 1,300 Palestinians, including some 700 civilians. Thirteen Israelis have been killed.
A unilateral ceasefire by Israel went into effect at 2:00 AM (00:00 GMT) on Sunday, with Israel suggesting that it had achieved all its objectives but that a troop withdrawal was contingent on Hamas ceasing its fire completely.
