Russian ambassador to Lebanon Sergei Poukin said on Friday that his country supports Egypt's efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible, local Elnashra website reported.
"UN Resolution 1860 should be implemented and an immediate ceasefire should be reached in Gaza," Poukin told reporters after meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora.
Before the meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had called on Iran and Syria to persuade Hamas to accept an Egyptian initiative to stop the fighting in Gaza, according to the report.
Poukin, meanwhile, expressed Moscow's deep concern regarding the security developments between Lebanon and Israel, calling on both sides to practice restrain.
"We support the unanimous stand of the Lebanese government which denounces the launching of rockets from south Lebanon into northern Israel," he said.
Three Katyusha rockets were fired last week from south Lebanon into Israel, prompting the latter to respond by firing back artillery shells.
