Indonesia has called for an international monitoring team to guarantee Israel and Hamas militants to comply with UN resolutions, local media reported on Saturday.
According to the daily The Jakarta Post, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that Indonesia is prepared to take part in the mission if the United Nations decides to set up one.
Presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal was quoted by the daily as saying, "The President highlighted the importance of a guarantee on an international monitoring force, and said Indonesia would take part in the mission."
"We request the UN to formulate the concept first; maybe the UN will conduct an assessment to find out the suitability of the team," Dino said on Friday.
Dino added Israel had a track record of abandoning UN Security Council resolutions in the past, thus an international monitoring team was necessary to ensure compliance with the new resolution.
Last week, President Yudhoyono sent a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, calling for an emergency UN session to issue a resolution on a cease-fire in the Gaza strip.
Yudhoyono will hold a phone conversation with French President Nicolas Sarkozy at 5:15 PM on Saturday to discuss the latest situation in the conflict, according to Dino.
"President Sarkozy has recently visited the Middle East and will inform President Yudhoyono on the issue," Dino said.
On Monday, Yudhoyono will host bilateral talks with Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Naji Otri, Dino added.
"The two leaders will discuss two main topics: Indonesia-Syria relations, and the latest situation in Gaza, because Syria plays an important role in the Middle East," he said.
