Int'l Standardization of Acupuncture Called for

Acupuncture, China's traditional therapy, should be internationally standardized after it was listed as an intangible cultural heritage, according to experts at an international forum Saturday.
More than 100 experts from China, Singapore, Iran, Egypt and other countries and regions attended the Asian Acupuncture Forum in Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province.
Acupuncture has won international fame, but still needs standards as a medical procedure, such as manipulating needles, so that it can stand up to the bias that Chinese traditional medicine is unscientific, said Li Zhenji, secretary general of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.
Guidelines on acupuncture should be drawn up for doctors in different countries to standardize their medical practices, said Liu Baoyan, vice chairman of the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies.
