Villagers Leave Construction Areas of Danjiangkou Reservoir for Emigration

Ferries carrying some 423 villagers in 100 households bound for emigration leave their native place in the construction areas of Danjiangkou Reservoir, at Leishan Village, Cangfang Town, Xichuan County, central China's Henan Province, June 29, 2010. A migration involving 151,000 residents in Henan Province is in full swing to make way for China's gigantic South-to-North water diversion project. The first batch of resettlers in the large-scale migration involves 65,000 villagers from 57 villages in Xichuan County, and the 2nd involves 86,000 villagers in 101 villages. So far, some 4,480 emigrants from the Danjiangkou Reservoir area have been relocated in 6 batches as of June 17. Its water level is expected to rise by 13 meters to 170 meters and storage capacity to increase by 11.6 billion cubic meters to meet the requirement of the construction plan. Relocation in the Danjiangkou involved 330,000 people, including 180,000 from Hubei and 150,000 from Henan in central China. Residents from Danjiangkou city of Hubei province and Xichuan county of Henan province will be settled in 11 towns and cities of the 2 provinces. [Xinhua]
