Islamic Jihad Says to Accept Conditioned Truce with Israel

A spokesman for the Islamic Jihad (Holy War) movement said on Sunday that his group would accept the current truce proposal "if Israel accepts the conditions of the Palestinian armed resistance."
Dawood Shihab, the group's spokesman in Gaza, said in a statement, "These conditions are related to reopening all the sealed-off borders crossings and terminals, lifting the two-year blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip and ending all types of military aggression."
After the end of a 22-day Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip on January 18, Israel and the Gaza militants led by Islamic Hamas movement respectively announced unilateral ceasefires.
However, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel rejected Hamas and other Gaza militant groups' offer to reach a long-term truce until Hamas frees captive Israeli corporal Gilad Shalit held in Gaza.
On Friday, senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar said on May 11 Egypt is going to discuss with Israel on brokering a truce with Hamas movement and other Gaza militant groups.
He said the Islamic Jihad has "presented to the Egyptian side our conditions for reaching a truce agreement with Israel. If Israel accepts our conditions, there will be a truce, otherwise, the situation will remain as it is right now."
Egypt has brokered a six-month truce effective on June 19 last year, but Israel and Gaza militants did not agree on the terms to extend it which ended on December 19. Israel then launched its unprecedented offensive on the Gaza Strip on December 27.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit Egypt on Monday to hold talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
