Fayyad to Announce New Palestinian Gov't Next Week

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad will announce the new expanded Palestinian government next Monday, sources said.

The government would represent President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, the factions that are included under the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and independent members, according to the sources.

The Islamic Hamas movement, which won the parliamentary elections in 2006, would not be invited to join this government which Abbas asked Fayyad to form.

As Fatah and Hamas are scheduled to resume reconciliation talks in mid-May in Cairo, the sources said this government will quit as soon as the two movements reach an agreement in the dialogue.

Earlier, Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, said it will not recognize the new government and will deal with it in the same way it dealt with Fayyad's current caretaker government since they were not put for confidence voting before the Hamas-dominated parliament.

In 2007, Abbas fired a Hamas-led coalition government after the Islamic movement routed his forces and seized control of Gaza. He asked Fayyad to form a new government based in the West Bank. Hamas continued to rule Gaza with its deposed administration.
