Palestinian Official Expects Less US Pressure on Israel for Peace

A Palestinian official on Tuesday predicted that US pressure on Israel to accept a Palestinian statehood will be limited.
"The US administration will put limited pressure on the Israeli government to encourage it implementing the peace obligations and the two-state solution," said Bassam al-Salhi, secretary-general of the Palestinian People Party, adding that "This pressure will remain weak."
On Monday, Israeli right-wing premier Benjamin Netanyahu said he is ready to resume the peace talks with the Palestinians without preconditions. But al-Salhi said the Israeli government's policies "aim at misleading and fastening the process of making Jerusalem Jewish and boosting the settlements."
He called on the Arab world to pressure the US administration to play a bigger role in the Middle East peace process.
The negotiations resumed in November 2007 following an American drive but stopped in February 2009 before Netanyahu took office.
The Palestinians blame the continuation of the settlements in West Bank and East Jerusalem, the territories that would form most of the future Palestinian statehood, for the failure of the peace talks.
