Hamas: US Pressure Won't Change Mind Regarding Israel

A Hamas spokesman on Thursday said US pressure and conditions will not succeed in making the Islamic movement to recognize Israel.
"Any way of pressure and extortion to obtain stances from Hamas is a desperate attempt and will not succeed," said Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum.
His remarks followed US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's statements that her administration will not deal with or fund any Palestinian government that includes Hamas unless the Islamic movement responds to the Quartet's conditions.
"These statements reflect a slide into wrong and failing policies the former U.S. administration used," Barhoum said. "These statements contradict with Barack Obama's speech about freedoms and the respect of the people's democratic choices."
The Quartet, which comprises the US, the EU, the UN and Russia, says any Palestinian government that includes Hamas must recognize Israel, accept peace deals and renounce violence in exchange for international recognition.
Hamas, which won the parliamentary election in 2006, completely rejects these conditions.
