Hamas Lawmaker Calls on Smaller Groups to Stop Rockets on Israel

A Hamas lawmaker on Tuesday urged small groups to think twice before firing rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip.

"People who are responsible for this either for factional reasons or personal reasons should be concerned about the interest of the Palestinians and the interest of resistance as well," said Ismail al-Ashqar, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC).

Hamas stopped firing rockets into Israel after the Jewish state ended a large-scale offensive in Gaza in January 2009. However, less-influential groups continued firing the rockets from time to time.

Al-Ashqar's calls were made as reports said that Egypt will discuss renewing a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. The Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman will arrive in Israel Wednesday and is scheduled to meet Defense Minister Ehud Barak on this issue.

Meanwhile, al-Ashqar said that the Israeli threats to target top Hamas leaders are not new and Hamas is seriously concerned about it. He said Israel justifies the threats under the pretext of Gaza rockets, adding that these threats were "totally rejected reasons."
