Hamas: Egypt's Reconciliation Proposal 'Positive'

A leading official of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said on Sunday that the Egyptian proposal to achieve a Palestinian reconciliation has positive provisions, but has also some parts that need clarifications.

Egypt, which mediates a dialogue between rival Palestinian groups, mainly Fatah and Hamas, has proposed forming a joint committee that unites Gaza and the West Bank, prepares for elections and reconstructing destruction in Gaza Strip.

Salah el-Bardawil told reporters in Gaza "the Egyptian proposal has some positive aspects because it shows Egypt's understanding of Hamas political position related to recognizing the state of Israel.

Hamas wants to form a unity government that respects the Palestinian commitments before the international community, while rival Fatah movement wants a government that "abide with" these commitments.

"Therefore, the Egyptian mediators have looked for a third solution to overcome this obstacle. Hamas considers, with satisfaction, the Egyptian proposal positive," said el-Bardawil.

On April 26, Egypt intends to invite the leaders of the two movements to Cairo on April 26, for a third round of dialogue and to receive both sides' responses to the proposal.

So far, the two groups had agreed on forming a transitional unity government, but disagreed on its political platform. They agreed on holding elections before January 25 next year, and disagreed on the elections' system.

"The Egyptian proposal has also a negative side, mainly keeping two governments, one in Ramallah that is committed to the international treaties and one in Gaza that execute the plan of reconstructing Gaza," said el-Bardawil.

He added that Hamas movement wants to know from Egypt whether its proposal means to have three governments (one in Gaza, the other in Ramallah, and the third is transitional joint committee) or not.
