Islamic Jihad Urges Hamas, Fatah to Commit to Dialogue

The Islamic Jihad movement on Monday called on rival factions of Hamas and Fatah to declare their commitment to the inter-Palestinian unity and reconciliation dialogue.

The call was made following a meeting between the Islamic Jihad leaders and envoys of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

"The two movements have to commit themselves to the dialogue to settle the political crisis," said Khaled al-Batsh, an Islamic Jihad official based in Gaza.

Hamas and Abbas' Fatah movements held several rounds of talks in Egypt during recent weeks, trying to figure out a unity government that would restore political unity to the Gaza Strip and the Fatah-ruled West Bank.

Al-Batsh announced that his movement supports Hamas in refusing a unity government "being formed according to international conditions and orders."

Hamas said it can not accept the formation of a government that would recognize Israel, abide by peace accords and renounce violence. The three conditions were outlined by the international community to lift isolation on the Palestinian governments.

Since Hamas took over the Gaza Strip by force in 2007, a Western-backed government was formed in the West Bank while Hamas' administration of the Gaza Strip was left blockaded by Israel and isolated by the West.
