The Islamic Hamas movement offered on Wednesday to host the sixth conference of rival Fatah movement in the Gaza Strip, saying the enclave is the safest place.

Hamas lawmaker in Gaza, Mushir el-Masri told reporters that the Gaza Strip is "the most safest area for Fatah movement to hold its sixth general conference," adding "the offer is welcomed by Hamas. "

Conflicting statements were recently made by senior Fatah movement leaders related to holding their sixth general assembly. Some said it might be postponed, but Fatah leader Ahmed Qurei assured that the conference will be held on time.

Fatah leaders haven't yet agreed on where the conference will be held. Some said that it will be held in the mid of April in Amman, Jordan, and others are calling for holding the conference in the West Bank.

On Tuesday, senior Fatah leader Nabil Shaath, who is currently in Cairo, said in a statement that Fatah movement asked Egypt to host the conference that hasn't been held for more than 15 years.

The conference is aimed at fixing Fatah movement and electing a new young leadership, after most of the movement central committee members had died over the past 15 years, including late leader Yasser Arafat.

"I believe Gaza is the sole safest liberated area where all the Palestinians from outside and inside can come and meet," said el- Masri, adding that he expresses hope that the inter-reconciliation dialogue will succeed.

Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2007 following weeks of violent clashes with rival Fatah movement. Hamas routed President Mahmoud Abbas' security forces and controlled the enclave afterwards.
