Hamas Denies Reports on Cairo Proposal That Abbas to Head Palestinian Unity Gov't

The Islamic Hamas movement on Monday denied some media reports that Egypt has proposed to designated current Palestinian President Mahmlud Abbas to head a future unity government.

Fawzi Barhoum, Gaza Hamas spokesman made the denial in a statement sent to reporters, after some earlier reports revealed that Egyptian intelligence chief Omer Suleiman had proposed in a meeting held last week in Cairo between rival Fatah and Hamas leaders to name Abbas as the premier of the transition government.

The reports said Suleiman's proposal was made to end differences between the two rival movements of Hamas and Abbas' Fatah over the political platform of a unity government that abide by the international Quartet requirements.

Barhoum said in the statement that "we didn't receive any official Egyptian proposals over naming President Ahmed Abbas as the prime minister of the coming government."

He, however, recognized that there are Egyptian ideas "to resolve the outstanding issue between Fatah and Hamas that is related to the political platform."

Upon an Egyptian proposal, leaders of Fatah and Hamas agreed last week to postpone their dialogue until April 26, after they failed to overcome their differences on outstanding issues, mainly forming a unity government.

Fatah wants Hamas to accept forming a government that expresses commitments to the world's requirements, while Hamas movement says this would mean a recognition of Israel and a condemnation of violence.

The international Quartet, grouping the UN, the US, the EU and Russia, has conditioned that any Palestinian government should recognize Israel, the signed agreements and condemn violence.

Hamas still insists that it would never recognize Israel and it would never condemn violence, which Hamas calls the "legal armed resistance against the Israeli occupation."

The Egyptian proposal to assign Abbas to form the government was an exit to the crisis to form a new transitional government that prepares for elections before January 25 next year.

"Our movement is ready to study every proposal (which) is presented by Egypt, but I don't believe that the proposal would get to the extent to assign Abbas to form and head the unity government," Barhoum stressed.
