Hamas Lawmaker Says Not to Join Gov't Dealing with Israel

A Palestinian Islamic Hamas movement lawmaker on Monday reiterated that the movement will not join any Palestinian unity government that recognizes Israel and the peace deals with it.
"We can not form a government according to the international quartet's conditions," said Mushier al-Massri, a Hamas legislator based in the Gaza Strip.
The quartet, which comprises the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia, demands Hamas to renounce violence, recognize Israel and accept the interim peace deals in exchange for an international recognition of any Palestinian government joined or led by the Islamic movement.
"Hamas is continuing, based on its principles and will not give up," al-Massri said, calling on President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, Hamas' bitter rival, to drop the quartet's demands as the two factions agreed on forming a unity government.
The agreement on the formation of the government was reached during inter-Palestinian dialogue earlier this month in Cairo. However, the two sides failed to agree on the government's platform since Hamas stressed it can not join any government dealing with the Jewish state.
The unity and reconciliation talks are expected to resume in Cairo next month where the factions will try to wrap up outstanding issues into a comprehensive deal.
