Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stressed on Monday that the Palestinian factions must reach a reconciliation deal in the coming second round of inter-Palestinian dialogue due to be held in Cairo.
"What is so important is to follow up the efforts of the ongoing dialogue in Cairo, where the first round of dialogue wasn't enough and was only to explore, but the second round must witness reaching an agreement," said Abbas.
Abbas made the statement as he chaired a meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee at his office in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
"The first round of dialogue was not enough for us because it was to explore views, but the second round will be a round of reaching an agreement on all the outstanding issues," said Abbas.
He told the PLO members and its factions' representatives who joined the dialogue in Cairo that "the dialogue was fruitful and successful. Today we will listen to all our brothers about the results of the dialogue and resuming it."
Leaders of 13 Palestinian factions held two-week talks in Cairo that ended last Thursday, where they agreed and disagreed on several issues related to forming a new unity government and preparing for elections before January 25 next year.
They transferred the pending issues they disagreed upon to a higher committee that is expected to convene in Cairo later this week.
The committee will first listen to Egypt intelligence chief Omer Suleiman, who would brief the committee members over the responses he got from the US officials on the Palestinian situation.
