Chinese President Hu Jintao, in written instructions, has said that the efforts China has made to oversee the country's post-disaster relief and reconstruction work have proven effective, according to an official statement issued Wednesday.

Hu's remarks came as the third anniversary of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Wenchuan in southwest Sichuan province on May 12, 2008 is approaching.

A meeting was held Wednesday in Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan, to review the country's efforts of supervision and inspection over its post-quake relief work. "The overseeing efforts have helped to guarantee the smooth operation of post-disaster relief work," Hu said in the instructions, urging experience summed up for future supervision and inspection efforts in other key projects and events.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also praised the role that the overseeing measures have played in streamlining the relief work following the Wenchuan earthquake.

The whole Party and the entire nation, at the firm leadership of the central government, have made concerted efforts to create great achievements in quake relief and post-quake reconstruction since the devastating quake struck three years back, said He Guoqiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, while addressing Wednesday's meeting Wednesday.

"Earth-shaking changes have taken place in quake zones primarily in Sichuan, with notable improvements in social and economic developments, as well as with the life of the people, "said He, who also hailed initial progress achieved with post-disaster reconstruction in Yushu of Qinghai province and Zhouqu of Gansu province.

"The authorities concerned have been strictly carrying forward the supervision and inspection work, which helped to prevent corruption among officials and to ensure the disaster relief and post-disaster reconstruction go smoothly," said He, who is head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).

"The use of relief materials and money is good from an overall perspective," said He," No major unsound or illegal activities occurred during the process of post-disaster reconstruction, which is transparent."

He urged efforts to learn from the experiences of overseeing work during the quake relief and reconstruction and to form a long-term mechanism to safeguard people's interests through tightened supervision and inspection.
