The quake, measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale, occurred at 14:28 on May 12, 2008 in southwest China's Sichuan Province. It is also known as the Wenchuan earthquake due to the location of the earthquake's epicenter, Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province.
