Jezek Strikes Gold over Alcaide
Czech Republic Cycling Track star Jiri Jezek of Czech Republic turned the tables on long time rival Roberto Alcaide of Spain to take gold in the Men's LC2 Individual Pursuit event. At Athens 2004 the gold went to Alcaide and the silver to Jezek. Four years later, the roles have been reversed - and by a convincing margin. Jezek led from the start and increased his lead by the lap, finishing a full four seconds ahead of his opponent. It wasn't an exceptionally fast time; it didn't need to be. Jezek had already added the Paralympic record to his name in the heats and wasn't out to ride a spectacular race. In taking the Paralympic title he confirms his World No. 1 ranking and will now surely have his eyes on the world record, just over a second faster than he rode in Beijing. In the bronze medal race, Romania's Carol Eduard Novak had little competition from Belgium's Jan Boyen on the day. (BOCOG September 8, 2008) Related Stories
