Special Aids for Paralympic Riders

Riders participating in Paralympic Equestrian Events can use approved special aids during the competitions.

Paralympic riders' basic items of clothing include a riding hat of international safety standard, breeches or jodhpurs, riding boots or stout riding shoes with heels and a short and a jacket. Each male or female rider wears a shirt, a stock and gloves, while spurs are optional.

Bridles and bits provide a means of contact and communication between horse and rider. Grade I and II athletes use a snaffle bit, while Grade III and IV athletes may use either a snaffle or a double bridle.

Apart from wearing appropriate equipment, competitors are also permitted to use special aids when this has been documented and approved by the International Equestrian Federation.

Visually impaired Grade III and Grade IV riders may use alternative methods to orientate themselves within the arena. They are allowed "callers" around the arena who call out a letter to the rider as they approach and pass. Many experienced riders use only one caller.

Compensating aids may be used by riders in Para-equestrian include: a whip for the replace of a leg, ladder reins, elastic bands, special stirrups, and some other assistant equipment. Any compensating aid used must allow the rider to fall free of the horse if necessary.

A total of 73 riders from 28 countries and regions compete for 11 gold medals in the five-day Beijing Para-equestrian which will run until September 11.
