Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said here on Thursday that nuclear power is to top the agenda of the G8 summit in May at a joint press conference with visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The two said that the G8 summit this year would touch on accidents at the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant crippled by the March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami.
Sarkozy, the first foreign leader to visit Japan since the twin disasters, said the summit would release a communique on nuclear issues. He added that nuclear power would remain a viable source of energy and the world needs nuclear power to cut carbon dioxide emissions.
Kan said Japan would review its energy policy following the nuclear crisis.
