M-6.0 Quake Jolts Northeast Japan

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 hit seas off Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan Thursday afternoon, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

The agency said the depth of the quake, which occurred at 16:15 PM (0715 GMT), was 40 kilometers.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake.

The JMA said the quake posed no tsunami risk.

The Pacific coastal areas of northeastern and eastern Japan is still recovering from the catastrophic March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami, which left 11,417 people dead and 16,273 others unaccounted for in Japan as of 10:00 AM Thursday, according to the National Police Agency.
