Strong Quake Hits Japan's Northeastern Region

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 hit Japan's northeastern Iwate Prefecture Thursday, said the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The focus of the quake, which occurred at 5:21 PM (0821 GMT), was located some 20 km under the sea off the Pacific coast of the prefecture, said the agency.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to properties,and no tsunami warning was issued.
