China Not Under Immediate Threat from Radioactive Leaks in Japan

Xinhua News Agency, March 19, 2011 Adjust font size:

China's environment and the health of its citizens are not under immediate threat from radioactive leaks following the explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, according to latest analysis on Friday.

The country's National Nuclear Emergency Coordination Committee said in a statement that people do not need to take iodine tablets or other measures to prevent being harmed by radioactivity.

The conclusion was based on three analyses of environment monitoring, meteorological forecast and ocean currents.

As of 4 p.m. on Friday, the air monitoring results from 41 cities across the country remained normal, according to the committee.

The latest meteorological analysis from an emergency response center in Beijing, which is affiliated with the World Meteorological Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency, indicated that China would remain unaffected over the next three days.

Another analysis of ocean currents from the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center show that China's seawater would not be affected by radioactive fallout anytime soon.
