Xizang children's hospital joins charity program for severe illness aid

The Xizang Maternity and Children's Hospital has partnered with the Ai You Foundation to become the first hospital in the Xizang autonomous region to be designated for the Ai You Children's Medical Assistance Program, according to Xizang Commerce Daily.

The partnership fills a long-standing gap in local charitable medical assistance for children with severe illnesses, enabling families to receive treatment and financial support closer to home instead of traveling outside the region.

For years, families of children suffering from conditions such as congenital heart disease and complications related to premature birth have faced heavy financial burdens, difficult travel conditions, and language barriers when seeking treatment elsewhere. The new program, which began in April 2023 and continues until March 2027, aims to ease those pressures through targeted medical aid.

The assistance program covers children under the age of 18 diagnosed with conditions including heart defects present from birth, irregular heartbeats, a sunken chest, extra fingers or toes, hip joints that formed out of place, and testicles that had not dropped into the normal position.

Eligible families can receive subsidies based on out-of-pocket medical expenses after insurance reimbursement. Financial assistance can reach up to 30,000 yuan ($4,423) for premature infants and up to 20,000 yuan for conditions such as congenital heart disease, kidney dialysis, and musculoskeletal disorders.

The application process has also been streamlined. Guardians can apply with guidance from pediatricians at the hospital, which submits materials through the Ai You Foundation's online platform. Approved funds are then disbursed directly, reducing wait times and simplifying procedures for families in need.
