China's major provincial economic powerhouses to further advance common prosperity in 2026-2030

Xinhua, April 23, 2026 Adjust font size:

China's major provincial economic powerhouses are expected to further advance common prosperity for all during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), an expert said during the latest episode of China Economic Roundtable, an all-media talk show hosted by Xinhua News Agency.

Liu Zhicheng, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research under the National Development and Reform Commission, said that China's major provincial economic powerhouses have developed a range of innovative approaches to pursue common prosperity and should keep setting an example in this regard.

As the driving forces of China's economy, 10 provincial-level regions -- Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Henan, Hubei, Fujian, Shanghai and Hunan -- contribute over 60 percent of the country's GDP.

Noting that Chinese modernization is the modernization of common prosperity for all, Liu said these regions need to strengthen their sense of responsibility and take the lead in promoting common prosperity as they boast better development foundations.

To advance common prosperity in the new five-year plan period, Liu urged these regions to adopt an employment-first strategy to ensure high-quality and sufficient employment.

He also called for more efforts to increase people's income, especially for low-income groups, and to keep consolidating the achievements of poverty alleviation.

Calling for better public services and stronger social security, Liu said that major economic provinces should continue delivering tangible results in livelihood programs and work to enhance the sustainability of the social security system. ■
