Mainland resolutely opposes military contacts between US, Taiwan: spokesperson

Xinhua, August 28, 2025 Adjust font size:

A Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday that the mainland resolutely opposes any form of military contacts between the United States and China's Taiwan region.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to media reports indicating that over 500 Taiwan soldiers had participated in this year's US Northern Strike military exercises. Notably, the drills for the first time shifted their simulated combat scenarios from Europe to the so-called "Indo-Pacific region."

Zhu urged the US side to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiques, to be "extremely cautious" in handling the Taiwan question, and to stop sending wrong signals to the separatist forces for "Taiwan independence".

The Democratic Progressive Party authorities' attempt to rely on foreign forces to seek "Taiwan independence" and use weaponry to deny reunification is completely overestimating themselves and will only bring about their own destruction, Zhu added.
