BMW Brilliance builds green electricity joint venture

Xinhua, July 28, 2025 Adjust font size:

BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. and China Datang Corporation Ltd. signed a strategic cooperation agreement on Thursday to build a green automotive value chain, with a new joint venture established.

Their cooperation makes BMW Brilliance China's first automaker to build a green electricity joint venture.

The venture will develop a 1-gigawatt onshore wind power project, vaulting BMW Brilliance to the forefront of renewable energy generation in the country.

It is expected to first supply BMW's Shenyang production base with stable, high-quality green electricity and then provide flexible purchasing options for BMW's Liaoning-based suppliers, dealers and charging-service operators, according to BMW Brilliance.

China is now expanding its green-energy capacity, with favorable policies designed to facilitate green electricity trading.

Currently, BMW Brilliance's Shenyang plant and 36 non-production sites already run on 100-percent renewable electricity. In 2024, some 200 local tier-one suppliers pledged to manufacture BMW parts with green electricity, cutting its supply chain carbon emissions by about 1 million tonnes compared with 2019.

BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. is BMW's China joint venture in Shenyang, northeast China's Liaoning Province. ■
