Recently, a young man who commuted by subway 933 times over a nine-month period to prepare meals for his wife and daughter touched the hearts of millions because of his devotion to family.

Tong Kai, a 28-year-old chef, lives with his wife and their one-year-old daughter near the Yingtianmen station of subway line one in Luoyang city, Central China's Henan province, and works near Qilihe station of the same subway line.

In 2024, Tong's wife was often occupied with taking care of their child and unable to spare time for cooking. Taking note of her exertions, Tong was filled with concern, especially for her health. Therefore, he decided to make an extra commute during his lunch breaks so that he could prepare hot meals for his wife and daughter.

With an average four subway trips a day, Tong persisted for a whole nine months, totaling 933 times, which not only warmed his family but also brought an unexpected surprise.

In a bid to promote the reduction of private vehicle usage and encourage public transportation utilization, the Luoyang Subway Group initiated the "Green Travel Alliance" campaign. As a result of his high subway travel frequency, Tong was awarded with the title of "Travel Expert" and was gifted with an electric vehicle.

Upon learning of this honor, Tong expressed a mix of surprise and joy, acknowledging that he never anticipated that his daily commutes for his family would bring him unexpected rewards.

"As my daughter grows older, I can drive my family to explore more in Luoyang city during my free time. But I will continue to choose the subway for daily commute," Tong said, praising the convenience and environmental-friendliness of subway travel.
