Sino-U.S. sci-tech agreement extended

The extension of the Agreement Between the United States and China on Cooperation in Science and Technology is in line with the interests of the two peoples, and is what the international community hopes to see, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Monday.

Lin made the remarks days after the two countries signed a protocol to amend and extend the agreement.

The agreement has been extended for an additional five years, effective from Aug 27, 2024.

Bilateral cooperation in science and technology benefits both countries, Lin said at a daily news conference.

The agreement, one of the first government-to-government agreement signed between the two countries since they established diplomatic ties, has provided strong support for China-U.S. exchanges and cooperation in science and technology.

The extension of the agreement will not only advance the two countries' progress in science and technology and their socioeconomic development, but also promote their joint efforts in responding to global challenges, Lin said.

The spokesman called on the U.S. to work with China to effectively implement the agreement, so that the two countries and the world will benefit from the fruits of bilateral cooperation in science and technology.
