Shenyang sees surge in international arrivals amid visa-free expansion

chinadaily.com.cn, November 19, 2024 Adjust font size:

As China continues to expand its visa-free policy, Shenyang is witnessing a significant increase in international arrivals.

Statistics show that over 16,000 travelers from countries eligible for unilateral visa-free entry have entered through Shenyang port this year, marking a nearly tenfold increase compared to the same period last year. More than 100 eligible travelers entered Shenyang on Nov 8 when the visa-free policy was implemented for nine countries, including Norway, Finland and South Korea.

The policy has stimulated Shenyang's aviation market. By the end of October, the Shenyang Taoxian International Airport's annual passenger throughput exceeded 20 million, reaching this milestone 55 days earlier than in 2023. International and regional passenger volume reached 842,000, an 83.67 percent year-on-year increase. The airport operates routes to 15 international destinations, including Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka and Frankfurt, with more on the way.

Recently designated by the State Council as a key international city in Northeast Asia, Shenyang is accelerating its development as a gateway for the Belt and Road Initiative with a focus on northward opening-up and Northeast Asian regional cooperation. The city hosts consulates from countries such as Japan, South Korea and Russia. It has attracted hundreds of multinational companies and welcomes thousands of international students annually.

Leveraging platforms such as the Shenyang Airport Economic Zone, the China-Europe Railway Express, and the China (Liaoning) Pilot Free Trade Zone, Shenyang is enhancing its position as a transportation hub by upgrading its international airport and land port facilities.
