Indian eateries in Beijing blossom amid aroma of China's economic resilience

Xinhua, March 12, 2024 Adjust font size:

As I meandered through the bustling streets of Beijing on a weekday evening, my senses were lured by an irresistible aroma that beckoned me to a quaint Indian restaurant nestled in the heart of this sprawling metropolis. "In Kitchen" was brimming with a busy stream of customers who, like me, were there to sate their cravings for authentic Indian delicacies.

Welcomed by the warm ambiance, I engaged in conversation with Chandan Kumar Bhanja, the restaurant's manager, who shared the story behind their recent expansion.

Unlike their previous branch, which offered a menu card system alongside occasional buffets, this new venture focused solely on providing a buffet experience. Bhanja, drawing from over a decade of experience in China's restaurant industry, explained that this shift aimed to offer customers a wide variety of Indian dishes at a reasonable price, catering to the fast-paced lifestyle in Beijing.

As I bit into a crispy "samosa," the crunch mingling with the rich blend of spices, I couldn't help but observe the steady stream of customers filling the restaurant, even on a weekday evening. This sight also served as a microcosm of China's rebounding consumption market, which has played a vital role in the country's economic recovery efforts.

In 2023, China's total retail sales of consumer goods rose by 7.2 percent year on year, reaching 47.15 trillion yuan (about 6.64 trillion U.S. dollars). Final consumption expenditure contributed significantly to economic growth, accounting for 82.5 percent of it, an increase of 43.1 percentage points compared to 2022.

Delving deeper into the subject of China's economic recovery, it's heartening to note the latest data that underscore a robust rebound. The Chinese economy wrapped up 2023 with target-beating growth despite domestic challenges and external pressure, providing a strong impetus for the global economy.

China's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 5.2 percent year on year to a new high of 126.06 trillion yuan last year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The growth rate is higher than the government's annual target of around 5 percent and exceeds the 3 percent increase in 2022.

This resurgence is not just limited to numbers on a spreadsheet but is visible in the bustling markets, the thriving restaurants, and the rejuvenated public spaces across the country. The palpable energy in the air speaks volumes of the positive trajectory that the Chinese economy is on.

The decision to expand In Kitchen reflects the optimism regarding China's economic prospects. Bhanja noted that every filled seat in the restaurant is a reflection of the economic confidence pulsating through Beijing. "Watching the city buzz with renewed energy and optimism, I'm more confident than ever in our decision to expand. China's economic recovery is a robust canvas on which businesses like ours can paint their success stories."

This tale of business triumph finds resonance in "Dastaan," another Indian restaurant situated in Beijing's bustling Sanlitun Soho area. Embarking on an expansion journey after just two years of operation, it stands on the cusp of growth propelled by its initial success. Co-founder Rabiul Baksh, previously a chef at a five-star hotel in Beijing and hailing from a lineage of culinary experts, attributes his decision to open a new branch to the promising prospects afforded by China's flourishing economy.

Entering 2024, China's economic development is bolstered by a multitude of advantageous factors, encompassing robust economic momentum, resilience, vitality, intensified reform and openness, and abundant policy latitude. Adding to this narrative of connection and openness is Beijing's enhanced initiative to welcome foreign entrepreneurs.

The city's market regulation authorities have recently introduced a groundbreaking policy that allows foreigners to complete the entire company registration process online through facial recognition. This innovative approach, which significantly reduces the registration time, marks a significant stride in China's commitment to opening up its markets and fostering a welcoming environment for international business.

Currently engrossed in the setup and logistics of his new branch, Baksh shares his vision for offering a unique twist at this new Dastaan location, aiming to provide a retro Indian cultural and culinary experience. The lively ambiance of these restaurants, especially popular among Chinese food enthusiasts, also serves as a wonderful reminder of how food can unite cultures and foster mutual understanding. In a world that often seems divided, the universal language of food has the power to connect hearts and transcend boundaries.

The exchange of culinary traditions not only enriches our palates but also our minds, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diversity that shapes our global tapestry.

Reflecting on the insights gleaned from conversations and observations in these eateries, I'm deeply moved by the intricate ties linking cuisine, cultural heritage, and economic prosperity. It's apparent that China's burgeoning economic growth acts as a rising tide, elevating all sectors, these restaurants included. The palpable vibrancy and dynamism in this setting not only inspire dreams in expatriates like Baksh and Bhanja but also contribute significantly to their businesses flourishing amidst this surge of growth and prosperity.

In the bustling streets of the Chinese capital, amidst the scents of spices and the chorus of diverse voices, lies a beautiful story of resilience, recovery and the unyielding strength of human bonds.
