Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu province, will gradually resume the operation of public transportation now that local COVID-19 infections have been contained.

Two subway lines connecting the city proper and the Jiangning District -- Line No. 1 and No. 3 -- will resume normal operations on Friday, and 24 bus lines linking the two areas will also reopen on the same day, according to the provincial department of transport.

Three other subways lines will reopen on Aug. 26. Inter-city and inter-provincial coaches will also gradually resume operations starting from that day.

Nanjing, which witnessed the country's latest resurgence of coronavirus cluster infections attributable to the Delta variant, cleared all medium- and high-risk areas for COVID-19 on Thursday.

The city logged no new locally transmitted cases on Wednesday. A total of 235 locally transmitted confirmed cases had been reported in the city as of Wednesday since cluster infections began to emerge on July 20, when a number of airport cleaners were found to be infected during a routine testing.
