ASEAN-China cooperation for a sustainable zero-poverty future

The 13th ASEAN-China Forum on Social Development and Poverty Reduction will be held in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, from June 26 to 28.

With the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development of China (LGOP) and the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as hosts, the forum will be held jointly by the International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC) and the Poverty Alleviation Office of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Under the theme of “ASEAN-China Cooperation on Poverty Reduction towards SDGs,” this forum has attracted more than 200 diplomats, experts, entrepreneurs and senior officials from China, ASEAN member states and international organizations, to share best practices of China and the ASEAN Member States on rural vitalization and poverty reduction, find correlation between rural and urban poverty and innovation for poverty reduction, and discuss ways of enhancing poverty reduction partnerships to realize the SDGs in the region.

Chen Zhigang, vice minister of LGOP of China, Chen Wu,chairman of the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, Ouk Rabun,minister of rural development of Cambodia, Noel K. Felongco, secretary/lead convenor of the National Anti-poverty Commission of the Philippines, Kung Phoak, deputy secretary-general of the ASEAN, and Jiang Qin,minister counselor of the mission of the People’s Republic of China to ASEAN attended the opening ceremony and delivered their remarks.

Following the opening ceremony, a plenary panel gathering wisdoms from intra-regional anti-poverty experts and international organizations’ representatives was held in reviewing and providing an outlook for the ASEAN-China cooperation on poverty reduction.

With four plenary sessions and a closing ceremony scheduled, the forum aims to cover anti-poverty issues that concern China and ASEAN member states. Session topics include: 

1. Towards the SDGs: Poverty Reduction Practices of China and ASEAN Countries

2. Accelerate ASEAN to Achieve the SDGs: Vision and Action

3. Experience Sharing of Selected Cases from the Global Best Practices for Poverty Reduction

The forum is expected to conclude with panel summaries delivered by IPRCC’s deputy director general Zhang Guangping, and Kung Phoak. The delegates will take field visits on June 28 to the Jinfu Pitaya Orchard and the Dendrobium Officinale at the Long’an Township of Nanning to learn about China’s poverty reduction practices through resettlement and industrial development.
