Intro: As one of the key universities in China, China Agricultural University (CAU) values international cooperation and exchanges, and South-South Cooperation (SSC) has been one of the top priorities their agenda, said CAU‘s president Sun Qixin last Thursday.

As one of the key universities in China, China Agricultural University (CAU) values international cooperation and exchanges, and South-South Cooperation (SSC) has been one of the top priorities their agenda, said CAU‘s president Sun Qixin last Thursday.

“Today there are still 80 percent of the world’s poorest of the poor live in agricultural areas in the world. China’s development experiences, particularly its trajectory of agricultural growth, rural development, poverty reduction, and agriculture-based industrialization and urbanization process are quite relevant to other southern countries, and are thus critical in dealing with the challenges at global level,” Sun indicated.

Sun Qixin, president of  China Agricultural University, makes a speech at a side-event

He said at a side-event during the Second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation held in Buenos Aires, the university has established partnership with 208 universities and institutes in 41 countries and regions so far. They are one of the most active contributors to South-South Cooperation in China, especially in agricultural sector, rural development and poverty reduction.

The university focuses on three areas regarding SSC, Sun pointed out in his speech.

Firstly, “mainstreaming SSC.” In the end of 2017, CAU, along with the Northwest A&F University, established China Institute of South-South Cooperation in Agriculture (CISSCA), to facilitate South-South learning and cooperation in agriculture. In 2018, it initiated Agricultural Education, Science and Technology Innovation League for South-South Cooperation whose members cover over 40 agriculture-related universities in China and over 30 universities in the Global South. It also works with UNOSSC, FAO, WFP, IFAD, the World Bank, UNDP, and other organizations on south-south agricultural cooperation.

Secondly, “studying SSC.” As one of the top research organizations on international development and SSC, the university issued the first evaluation framework for SSC in New York at UNOSSC in 2018. It is also a host of China International Development Research Network (CIDRN) since 2013. In addition, it has made great efforts on research capacity building on SSC in China by fostering young talents and establishing intellectual pool for sustainable development.

Thirdly, “doing SSC.” The university has established 11 overseas development centers in the global south regions, and shared agricultural development experience with global partners through joint projects. “By doing so, we aim to bring the local perspectives and experiences to the global partners, and bring the global insights to local practices and innovations,” Sun said.

With the theme of South-South Cooperation for Agricultural Development, the side event aimed to showcase the best practices and lessons learned, share the UN’s insights to local practices and innovations, bring the local perspectives and experiences to the United Nations, and invigorate action-oriented and effectiveness-led SSC for the next 40 years. It was co-hosted by the Belt and Road/South-South Cooperation Agricultural Education, Science and Technology Innovation League, China Agricultural University and University of Buenos Aires.
