China Africa by Xia Yuanyuan & Ma Xiaowen,March 08, 2019 Adjust font size:

2019 is an important year for China’s battle against poverty and its goal of eliminating poverty by 2020. On March 7, Liu Yongfu, head of State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, said that China has set a target to reduce the poor rural population by more than 10 million and take 300 counties off the country's list of impoverished areas in 2019.

In the past six years China lifted more than 80 million rural poor out of poverty, with the rural poor population down from 98.99 million at the end of 2012 to 16.6 million at the end of last year.

Francis Pelenah Jr., an editor of Liberia Broadcasting System shared his views on China’s poverty reduction with ChinAfrica. According to him, in China, everything is about the people and the government is concerned about the people. He finds China's experience in poverty alleviation to be very useful for his country.
